Best UK Employee Discount Schemes for Small Businesses (2026)

For decades, employee discount schemes belonged to the FTSE 250. A small business owner watched envious as the multinational down the road handed every new starter a perks card good for cinema tickets and supermarket vouchers, then went back to wondering whether they could afford a Christmas meal. That has changed. There are now half a dozen serious UK platforms aimed squarely at businesses with 5–250 staff, and the cost-per-employee has fallen by an order of magnitude. This guide is a practical, independent review of which scheme makes sense for which kind of small business — written for owner-operators, not procurement departments.

What an employee discount scheme actually does

At its core, an employee discount scheme aggregates retailer offers into a single portal that staff log into. The scheme provider negotiates discounts with merchants, hosts the codes or links, and gives the employer a co-branded experience. Employees see a directory of perks — supermarket cashback, gym memberships, cinema tickets, mobile plans, family days out — and click through to redeem. The employer pays a per-user-per-month fee, or a flat platform fee, or in some cases, nothing at all.

The two questions that matter for a small business: (1) does the scheme have genuinely good deals, or just a wall of 5%-off codes you could find on Google? And (2) is the per-user cost low enough that you do not regret the decision when half your team logs in twice and never returns?

The four UK schemes worth a serious look

Perkbox

The market leader by SMB headcount. Perkbox bundles a discount portal with a wellness hub (meditation, fitness, learning) and a peer-to-peer recognition tool. Strong UK retailer line-up — Asda, Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Caffè Nero — and a slick mobile app. Pricing is around £6 per user per month at the time of writing, with a minimum seat count.

Where it wins: feels premium, has the broadest small-business retailer selection, and the wellness side is more substantive than competitors. Where it loses: minimum-seat pricing is brutal for sub-15-employee teams, and quarterly admin can be heavy.

Reward Gateway / Boostworks

The enterprise-grade option that has been creeping into the SMB space. Reward Gateway (now part of the same group as Boostworks for SMB) has the deepest catalogue of UK retailers, the strongest cashback, and the best-known brand. The trade-off: pricing is enquiry-only, contracts tend to be 12 months minimum, and the sales process is heavier than Perkbox.

Where it wins: largest retailer catalogue, strongest cashback rates, very polished implementation. Where it loses: not really designed for under-25-employee teams.

BrightHR Perks

BrightHR's perks layer is bundled into the BrightHR HR-software subscription. If you are already paying for BrightHR for HR/leave management, the perks come at no extra cost. The catalogue is competent rather than spectacular — fewer big-name retailers than Perkbox or Reward Gateway, but the staples (high-street fashion, cinema, supermarket cashback) are covered.

Edenred and Pluxee

The big European players, particularly strong in childcare-voucher legacy schemes and meal-allowance benefits. Edenred has a UK SMB tier, but the experience is more "benefits administration" than "modern perks app". If you need salary-sacrifice integration with childcare vouchers or meal benefits, these are the platforms to call. For pure discount-portal use, they are not the strongest pick.

Free alternatives (and where they fall short)

Which scheme suits which kind of small business

After running this question past dozens of SMB owners, a clear pattern emerges:

If you are paying for a discount scheme that is heavy on niche merchants and light on supermarkets, fuel and entertainment, your usage rate will be poor regardless of how nicely the portal is designed.

Implementation tips

Whichever scheme you choose, three implementation moves materially raise adoption:

  • Launch with the four highest-use categories visible. Do not bury Tesco cashback under three sub-categories.
  • Send a Friday-afternoon round-up — "these are this week's best perks". Even at 10 minutes a week, this single move can double active use.
  • Re-onboard at six months. Most employees who lapse do so within four months. A reminder at the half-year point, with new featured deals, claws back about a third of lapsed users.
